About Elder Care Record

Last reviewed:

Elder Care Record shows the record that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) keeps for each certified nursing home in the United States. The site has the records of 14,690 homes.

What the site is for

A person who must select a nursing home, or check one, has little time. The site puts the CMS record of one home on one page:

  • the CMS star ratings
  • the citations from inspections
  • the fines and payment denials
  • the nurse staffing hours
  • the owner organisations

Each figure is beside the median for the county and the state. The site uses the terms that CMS uses, and it explains each term at the place where the term appears.

Each county and each city has one table of its homes. A compare tool puts four homes side by side. A dated log shows the values that changed in each CMS update.

What the site leaves out

  • Advice. The site does not tell a reader which home to select. It does not call a home good or bad.
  • Rankings. No table is in order of a rating, a count of citations or a fine. Each table starts in order of name, and the reader can sort it.
  • Persons. The CMS files hold the names of owners, officers and managers who are persons. The site shows organisations only.
  • Inspection narratives. The site shows the F-tag of each citation and the CMS summary of the requirement. The report that the surveyor wrote is not in the CMS data files.

How the site makes its pages

A program makes each record page from the CMS data files. The same files always give the same text. No generative AI writes the pages.

The sentences on a record page are fixed patterns. The program puts the figures of the home, the county or the state into them.

People wrote the guides, the glossary and the pages about the site. Each of those pages shows the date of its last review.

CMS publishes new files about one time each month. The site looks for new files each day. The methodology page shows how the site calculates each figure.

Funding

Advertising pays for the site. Each advertisement has a label. An advertiser has no influence on a figure, on the order of a table or on the text of a page.
